Hair transplantation offers one of the most profound and lasting improvements in a patient’s appearance and sense of self-esteem, in all of cosmetic surgery. Dr Thaker is a cosmetic surgeon with unique and significant University training in hair transplantation. He has trained at the prestigious University Hospital of Athens, Greece, to add a special ‘no incision’ minimally invasive technique to his approach to hair restoration. His technique involves implanting each follicle by the doctor’s own hand and without traditional incisions. It combines the highest level of technical precision using needle implanters, with artistry and vision of design for the patient’s hair restoration.
Dr Thaker has been a featured expert in the news media regarding hair restoration, and has taught hundreds of medical doctors and health care professionals regarding hair restoration and hair loss as a continuing medical education course director. He has been requested to serve as a hair restoration director for both international and US cosmetic chains, whereas he enjoys the independence of a private practice and the multitude of options he can offer his patients through individualized attention. Transplantation using Dr Thaker’s technique is a profound ‘cure’ for male pattern baldness for many patients, as fallen hair can be replaced by resilient transplanted follicles. The reason is that hair harvested from the back of the scalp ‘safe zone’ tends to not fall out, even over a life time. When this same hair is transplanted to the front of the scalp, it retains its resilience, and can last many years or life long. His technique does not involve a long tell-tale scar at the back of the head, nor the thousands of tiny incision tracks and lines that scar the front of the scalp. Once thought of as a treatment for only male pattern baldness, hair transplantation can be equally effective for hair loss in women, as well as for other areas of the body such as eyebrow, chest and beard restoration.
For all patients an analysis of hair loss begins with a search for medical causes, that other doctors may miss or avoid all together. Dr Thaker first establishes that a patient does not have a medical condition that must be addressed first. A common example is thyroid disease or even a medication effect. Dr Thaker addresses these causes first and provides solutions hand in hand with surgical techniques that are lasting, safe and effective.
Surgical transplantation is often combined with regenerative medicine or ‘PRP’ to stimulate hair growth and retention. To maximize yield of the procedure, PRP- platelet rich plasma, is combined with surgery or as an alternative to surgery for those who do not want an operation. PRP takes a small sample of the patient’s own blood, and processes this sample to concentrate the growth factors that are derived from platelets. This ‘PRP’ is then injected into the areas of concern on the scalp, to maximize growth and yield of the grafts, and aid in recovery of the harvested hair or ‘donor site’. The main reason is each individual only has so many possible donor hair follicles, even counting body hair which also can be used.
Thus the atraumatic technique used by Dr Thaker, minimal handling of the grafts to protect the delicate bulbs of the follicle, and use of PRP with surgery are key aspects of hair transplant surgery to maximize graft growth and cosmetic result. These aspects for graft survival are overlooked by the ‘factory approach’, where large suction machinery is used in other centers, where unlicensed technicians and non-M.D. staff perform key aspects that should be done exclusively by the surgeon.
